Department of Pharmacy with a PE-course

The Department teaches botany and 2 specialized subjects which are pharmacognosy and pharmaceutical technology for pharmacy students. The Department holds postgraduate education-classes in pharmacognosy for residents in the specialty «Pharmaceutical chemistry, pharmacognosy» and advanced training courses for pharmacists. Within the botany subject, students study the flora of the Krasnoyarsk territory, gain knowledge and master skills in plant anatomy and morphology, which is the basis for further learning of the subject pharmacognosy. The Department has microscopes, sets of permanent micro-preparations, alcohol material for the production of temporary micro-preparations and herbarium of local flora to teach those subjects. The botany course ends by a summer field practice, where students consolidate theoretical and practical knowledge, get acquainted with the plants of the local flora in its natural habitat, prepare their herbaria. At lessons of pharmacognosy students study medicinal plants and medicinal plant raw materials used in medical practice in the Russian Federation, as well as their chemical composition, methods of standardization and ways of use in medicine. To master these knowledge and skills, students work with the herbaria of medicinal plants and medicinal plant raw materials. They use magnifying glasses and microscopes, analytical equipment and reagents to master the standardization of raw materials. The knowledge and skills gained during the study of pharmacognosy are consolidated in the field practice in pharmacognosy, where students prepare medicinal plant raw materials and herbaria of medicinal plants in their natural growth areas, cultivate medicinal plants not growing on the territory of the Krasnoyarsk territory, and standardize the prepared raw materials. The course of pharmaceutical technology consists of two sections: pharmaceutical technology and factory pharmaceutical technology. At lessons of pharmaceutical technology, students acquire knowledge and skills in the production, assortment of dosage forms in the pharmacy setting and in the pharmaceutical production. During two apprentice trainings students produce various dosage forms, such as solutions, ointments, powders, suppositories, suspensions and others at the workplace of a pharmacist-technologist in a pharmacy. Scientific work at the Department is carried out in 3 directions: 1) obtaining products enriched with selenium to increase the antioxidant humans’ status 2) search for new promising species of the genus Lapchatka (Potentilla L.) 3) development of alternative medicinal forms of the hypoglycemic agent gliclazid.
