In 1942, the year of foundation of the Krasnoyarsk State Medical Institute, the Department of Microbiology was organized, headed by PhD, Professor A.I. Shapiro who worked in this position until July 1945. Also the department was headed by Candidate of Medical Science B.A. Boyarinova, Doctor of Medical Science, Professor V.D. Shtiben, Doctor of Medical Science, Professor, Honored Scientist of the Soviet Socialistic Republic of Moldova S.A. Blinkin, Candidate of Medical Science, Associate Professor B.M. Zelmanovich, Candidate of Medical Science, Professor G.I. Sharov, PhD., Associate Professor V.G. Melnikov. From October 1993 till September 2020 the department was headed by Candidate of Biological Science, Associate Professor Olga V. Perianova. Since September 2020 the head of the Department is Doctor of Medical Science Elena N. Bochanova.
In 2009 the Department of Microbiology was named after Ass. Professor Boris Michalovich Zelmanovich. The whole life of Boris Zelmanovich is inextricably linked with the history of our university and the department of microbiology, with the creation and development of the pediatric faculty of Krasnoyarsk Sate Medical University. B.M. Zelmanovich headed the department for a quarter of a century, was the organizer and the first dean of the pediatric faculty, having worked in this position for twenty-three years.
Microbiology and virology are taught for students majoring in "General Medicine", "Pediatrics", "Dentistry", "Medical Cybernetics", and "Pharmacy". The department has accumulated a lot of experience in the use of active teaching methods that allow attracting students to an in-depth study of microbiology, making the learning process more productive and creative. The annual thematic All-Russian Olympiads in Microbiology with international participation attract an increasing number of participants and are an example of the effective use of active learning.
An important component of the educational process is scientific research of a fundamental and medical science. Students participate in research work and present research results at annual student scientific and various practical conferences. It is very important that research is carried out in conjunction with clinical departments. This gives students the opportunity to assess the role of medical microbiology in future work and helps in their professional orientation.
The main scientific direction of the department at present is the study of the molecular genetic characteristics of microorganisms involved in the development of purulent-inflammatory diseases. The work is carried out within the framework of the state assignment for the implementation of fundamental scientific research in cooperation with the specialized clinical departments of the university, with the leading institutions of the Russian Federation - the Research Institute of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy (Smolensk), the Research Institute of Children's Infections of the Federal Medical and Biological Agency (St. Petersburg). Within the framework of international activities, the department actively cooperates with Japanese colleagues. In February 2010, the Russian-Japanese Scientific Center for Microbiology, Metagenomics and Infectious Diseases was established. From the Japanese side, the curator of the Center is the head of the International Scientific and Educational Medical Center (Niigata, Japan), Professor Emeritus of Krasnoyarsk State Medical University, Professor Tatsuo Yamamoto.
