Department of operative surgery and topographic anatomy

The Department of Operative Surgery and Topographic Anatomy was founded in 1942.

The first Head of the Department was Doctor of Medical Science P.A. Balakirev, the assistants were Candidates of Medical Science V.A. Neigas, L.A. Meer and R.I. Barvina who came from Leningrad and Krasnoyarsk surgeon S.F. Fyodorov. After Doctor of Medical Science P.A. Balakirev departed to Moscow, assistant S.F. Fyodorov temporary acted as Head of the Department from February to December 1945. From 15 December 1945 to July 1960, the Department was headed by Candidate of Medical Science, Associate Professor, the Great Patriotic War participant P.E. Zaitsev.

The Department was located in anatomical building (in Kirov street). The Department staff assistants G.P. Maltseva, M.N. Buyanova, L.K. Kozlova did a great deal of work organizing educational process at the Department.

From August 1960 to August 1961, A.I. Lapiner temporary acted as Head of the Department.

In July 1961, Doctor of Medical Science V.K. Tsvirko (following public competition for qualified candidates) was elected Head of the Department. He worked at the Department for four years.

In 1963, the Department was relocated to the newly-constructed main building of the Institute.

From September 1965 to February 1966, assistant L.K. Kozlova acted as Head of the Department. From 1966 to September 1969, the Department was headed by Candidate of Medical Science Valentina Nikolaevna Zinovieva.

Together with her there worked assistants L.K. Kozlova, I.S. Ishutin, I.Yu. Bravve, Yu.A. Kapitanov, V.G. Nikolaev, V.N. Bogomolov, P.I. Nikolaev and post-graduate student A.N. Karpovich. During that year the Department acquired new equipment and teaching aids, two candidate theses were prepared and defended (by assistant L.K. Kozlova and post-graduate student A.N. Karpovich).

From 1969 to June 1976, the Department was headed by a great scientist and educator, Doctor of Medical Science, Professor Vladimir Yakovlevich Barakov. The staff comprised Associate Professor P.A. Samotesov, senior lecturer, Candidate of Medical Science L.K. Kozlova, assistants Yu.A. Kapitanov, Yu.E. Podporin, V.E. Tychenko, V.M. Belov, V.O. Telnukhov, post-graduate student Yu.I. Karukin, a senior laboratory technician, two laboratory technicians and fife preparators.

The staff of the Department did a great deal of teaching and methodological work. Program control and teaching became to be widely used in the educational process. Graphological structures for practical classes and lectures were compiled.

Scientific research was carried our in the field of ‘Diaphragm plastic in abdominal surgery’. As a result of this work, there was released a thematic publication of collected papers of the Department titled ‘Diaphragm Plastic and Organopexy in Abdominal Surgery’. Under Professor V.Ya. Barakov’s guidance, a candidate thesis was completed and defended (by L.M. Mudrova). The employees of the Department published in local and central journals more than 30 scientific articles, an invention (by V.M. Velov) and 17 rationalization proposals were produced. More than once the Department took first places in social competitions.

In 1970, P.A. Samotyosov (former Institute graduate, Lenin scholarship winner), having completed a post-graduate course and successfully defended a candidate thesis, came to work at the Department, in 1976 he was appointed Head of the Department. Pavel Afanasievich Samotyosov was at the same time, from 1994, Deputy Rector on educational work.

In 1971 he defended his candidate thesis titled ‘The dynamics of copper, zinc, manganese and nickel in blood fractions, organs and tissues during surgical interventions on pancreas’ in the specialized Academic Council of Gorky State Medical Institute, and in 1990 he defended his doctoral dissertation on the theme of ‘Connective tissue stroma of the pancreas’ in the specialized Academic Council of I Moscow State Medical Institute named after I.M. Sechenov.

Scientific degree of a Professor was awarded to him in 1990, and in 2000 P.A. Samotyosov became an academician of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences. He is a member of the specialized Academic Council on doctoral dissertations defense in specialties ‘Surgery’, ‘Anatomy’, ‘Ophthalmologic Diseases’. The main scientific fields are morphology of connective tissue of organs and tissues, scientific organization of the educational process. He developed and implemented into the teaching process some new educational technologies.

Pavel Afanasievich Samotyosov published 7 teaching-aid books, more than 200 scientific articles and monographs, among them ‘Diaphragm plastic in abdominal surgery’, 1977; ‘Constitution of the rectum and its interorgan relations’, 2000; ‘Laparometric characteristic of symptoms’, 2001; ‘Connective tissue stroma of the pancreas’, 2002; ‘Laparotomy and the layer structure of the anterior abdominal wall’, 2003; ‘Morphological propensity for erectile dysfunction’, 2004; ‘Erectile dysfunctions and constitution’, 2004.

Under his guidance 15 candidate theses and 3 doctoral dissertations were prepared. Since 1999 P.A. Samotyosov has been an honorary worker of the Russian Federation Higher School.

In 1978, the Department was relocated to the new morphological building. At present the Department possesses good training operation rooms, an operation block, an embalming section and some utility premises.

The Department has been constantly renewing its equipment: anesthesia machines, MBI-15 operation microscope, suturing apparatuses, and teaching aids, such as tables, models, personal computers and educational software.

From 2011 to 2020, Head of the Department was Doctor of Medical Science, Professor N.S. Gorbunov. In 2020 Candidate of Medical Scienc, Associate Professor A.N. Russkikh was appointed as Head of the Department.

At present 1 senior teacher, 1 associate professor and 3 professors work at the Department.

The Department provides classes for students in General Medicine, Pediatrics and Dentistry as well as for residents of surgical departments.

The educational process has been completely modified. Practical classes are carried out in a ‘small groups’ mode. There were developed methodological materials in algorithms for self-studying used by the students of all the faculties. Text books in algorithms on operative surgery with topographic anatomy were published. Problematic studying is being implemented into the educational process. Permanent examination session takes place at the Department. Since 1998, three-stage exam in the discipline has been introduced.
