Pathology Department named after prof. P. G. Podzolkov.

Head of the Department: Vladimir A. Khorzhevsky, Candidate of Medical Science, anatomic pathologist of the highest qualification grade, Deputy Chief Medical Officer for Anatomic Pathology in Territorial State Budgetary Institution of Healthcare Krasnoyarsk Territory Pathological-Anatomical Bureau, the Chairman at Krasnoyarsk Regional Department of Russian Society of Oncopathologists.

Pathology Department was founded in 1942. The first Head of Department of KrasSMI was Leon Manusovich Shabad. His institute was evacuated from Leningrad to Krasnoyarsk during the Great Patriotic War. L. M. Shabad was an educator and experimentalist. He was a mentee of L. M. Shor, a famous professor and pathologist.

From the first years of its existence, the Department determined clinical anatomical area of research and put into practice the research principles of the Moscow school of Anatomic pathologists, which became traditional in Krasnoyarsk. Petr Georgievich Podzolkov, a leading anatomic pathologist, played a significant role in the development of the Department. It is very interesting that Petr Georgievich was one of the pioneers of implementation of information technologies in medicine. In 1972 he published his papers dedicated to the automation and implementation of computer technologies.

The Department is closely connected to practical medicine. All the members of the Department are practicing pathologists. For instance, V. A. Khorzhevskii, Head of the Department, is the Deputy Chief Medical Officer for Anatomic Pathology in Krasnoyarsk Territory Pathological-Anatomical Bureau, which is the largest center for pathoanatomic diagnostics of the entire Krasnoyarsk Territory.

There are the following practical research areas at the Department: uropathology, gematopatology, female pathology and oncopathology. Every year the Department provides training programs for students from different faculties of KrasSMU.

Student scientific clubs are actively developing at the Department. Students who participate in such clubs receive career guidance and acquire new in-depth knowledge in the chosen areas of pathological anatomy.

The Department offers medical residency program which entails professional training of specialists in practical healthcare. Members of the Department who know the methods of morphological diagnostics, including immunohistochemical, immunofluorescent, cytogenetic (FISH) and electron microscopic one, pass on their experience to future pathologists using examples of current diagnostic activities. Professional training of specialists is facilitated by the fact that students can visit the pathology Departments of the largest clinics in the city where their curators work.

Since 2020, advanced training cycles within the system of continuing medical education will begin on an ongoing basis.
